Hi Everyone!
I made it to Hot Springs, NC last Thursday. It was necessary for me to come to Asheville because I had to serve Jury duty on Monday. After spending most of the day waiting, they said I could go. Unfortunately, while here in Asheville, I received a call from the lady I call Grandma. She has cancer and they have put her on Hospice care. She would really like to see me. My plan is to put the hike on hold and do my best to travel to New Orleans to spend some time with her. I will update you further about if I'm able to continue my hike of the Appalachian Trail.

May 19th - Hi Friends, I am in Asheville the next few days to check on my jury duty assignment. I'd love to see you tomorrow afternoon for a pot-luck picnic at Lake Julian around 3:00pm. Hope to see you there! Rose
Day 29- Was a little sluggish the first 2 miles. I don't think, I drink enough water, yesterday. Drink a liter of water and Advil to help and it did. Hike was easy, hard, terribly hard, views are gorgeous, and made them shelter 2 hours before sun went down.
Day 30- We (Butter Bear, Imposter, Feisty, Dash, Love) are hiked uphill to Clingman's Parking and took nero at Gatlinburg. Kelly and I hitched a ride to town, my first ever. Hunter the drive just got done hiking so he had no shirt. Give us apples to eat and would not take money for the ride, very nice man. It's hard to do laundry when you need to wash all your clothes. It was quit the experience walking around town with missing under clothes in rain coat on hot day. Day 22- We (Linsey- Dash, Larry- Walking Bear, Kelly- Butter Bear, and myself) shared a hostel room together and had breakfast at nantahala outdoor center before we attacked the mountain/s. Still don't have my hikers leggs or magical gained 6 inches to go over the logs or rocks. Kelly and I got a late start and the heat effected my breathing which effected my walking. We slowed down and took lots of breaks. It's all up, no down, and great view at the jump up. Tomorrow goal is to do 15 miles.
Day 23- I got a early start but knew that I wasn't going to 15 miles at the first view point. I ate my breakfast there and didn't want to leave. After every big climb, there was something great. The third climb up, the Monarch butterflies are/were doing its migration dance. Just had to stop and take in the beauty of it all. Butter Bear, Dash and I had apples at the road that left for the hikers- trail magic. Than, we attacked Jacob's Ladder- came out of that with back ache, but fixable. Ate nuts for dinner then went to bed. Day 24- Going for 12.8 miles and the windy is harsh. There were a lot of obstacles. Trees to climb over, around, under, and circus tricks across land slide of trees. Scarry but felt awesome after. Feisty (She from Australia), Butter Bear, and I were hurting when we made to the shelter. Day 25- May 5th....zero day, today at Fontana Shelter (Hilton). It overlooks the lake, solar panel to charge your electronic devices, shower, and regular bathroom at cost free stay. If the Lodge has power, than we are going for all you can eat breakfast. Day 26- Feisty left, Imposter, Dash, Butter shared a Cabin where Jeff, Tara, Nadine, and Andy came with cards and food. Some people got whipped followed by spaghetti dinner, awesome. Day 27- Sunday...12 miles, late start was hard. We arrived at the shelter in time to get dinner and bed. Usually, we all go to bed when sun goes down. Day 28- Hike was easy at the beginning and rested a little to long on the mountain top because the down hill was killer. Arrived at the shelter area as the sun was going down. Feisty was there as tent was set up, ate peanut butter, and to bed. Happy to have made it thus far, month- May 8. |
